Time Lapse of Crowd Control in Tokyo Japan for Comic Market

Comic Market is the world’s largest self-published comic book fair, held twice a year in Tokyo, Japan.

This time lapse video shows an amazing and almost scary talent for crowd control.

Writing is not like talking

Everyone who blogs probably knows this feeling: talking is easier than writing. I have a huge list of unfinished blog posts. I always hold back because I wonder “Will anyone care about this?”

It is easy to talk about ideas when you meet people, because they are in front of you. You can see their face and you can gage if they are interested in what you are bringing to the table.

Writing to an online audience… I start to feel self conscious quickly.

From now on I’m gonna try not to care too much and just write anything that comes to mind.

On my way to Tokyo, Japan

2011 sad for japan

I am on my way to Japan! I am doing a special secret exhibition in Tokyo, more on that later.

I am very very excited… after hurricane stress in New York I am ready for the best sushi, shabu shabu, donburi, soba, miso soup, tsukiyaki, mochi, omurice, ramen, tonkatsu, tempura, yakitori, bento, edamame, ikura, tofu, and anything I can try that I have not tried before.

Japan is the best!

Hurricane Sandy Report

bubbles

Hello to all of you. Thank you for all the kind emails and messages related to hurricane Sandy.

I just wanted to let you know that I’m OK. If you were worried about me, don’t worry. Lower Manhattan is without electricity so I’m staying in Brooklyn for a few days.

In my area (Chinatown/LittleItaly) things were not that bad. Electricity is down for a few days but cabs are driving and I did not see any broken buildings. Some things broke, but it didn’t look that bad. I did not go to see the real danger areas near the water…

Good luck and thank you to all who are rebuilding what’s broken.

“Over Here Over There”, a new song by my band Cold Void

I am happy to share “Over Here Over There” with you.

It is a new song by Cold Void, a music group I started together with Luuk Bouwman.

I hope you like it!

Turn Times Square into Art Square

Times Square Art Square is a group of people with an ambitious dream: They want to turn Times Square in New York City into a gigantic public exhibition, one month per year. Times Square is one of the busiest spots on earth, and therefore it is saturated with moving billboards. These screens could also show art. That is the mission of Times Square Art Square.

I am excited to be the first artist involved, and I really hope this dream becomes a reality very soon. You can help by spreading the word and by contributing on the Kickstarter page.

Let’s make it happen!

Two male figures by Kazimir Malevich

kazimir malevich two male figures

Malevich is an artist who took some very interesting turns in his work. He painted the world’s first monochrome (his black square) and took radical and bold steps in painting. After full abstraction he went back to figuration.

I have always wondered what Malevich was thinking when he was painting this painting. It is a very funny image; two men in the exact same outfit and their beards waving in the wind.

I think Malevich must have been a very funny guy.

@yyolk asks on Twitter: @newrafael just curious, what’s your level of knowledge in regards to actual coding?

real programmers binary

Hi @yyolk,

My coding knowledge is tiny. Smaller than a pimple on a fruitfly.

I remember trying to code in 2000/2001. I could play a bit with framesets in html, and “gotoFrame” in Flash. But then it just felt like there was a wall I had to learn to climb. I just wasn’t motivated, or I don’t have the talent. Probably a bit of both.

I don’t know css, I know maybe 3 tags in html, and I know how to do “goto random frame” in Flash. That is my total knowledge of coding.

I remember seeing a discussion at the New Museum, about the question “should everyone know how to code”? After all, our world is more and more digital so not knowing how to code is like being illiterate?

I don’t know if I would make better work if I was coding it myself. I was very lucky to meet nice people who’ve helped me, in particular Reinier Feijen. He is very friendly and patient and he enjoys the process of solving visual puzzles.

I do know that I’m running out of time as is, so it’s good for me to work together with people.

“Art Website Sales Contract” updated version

art website sales contract 2012

The Art Website Sales Contract is a document I created in 2011. I use it when I sell one of my art websites. The document is both the certificate of authenticty, and a legally binding document between the artist and the art collector. Selling websites as art pieces is still very new, and I hope this document can help any artist who want to sell their art this way.

I think selling a moving image in a domain name is an elegant solution: the work is available to the public, and the ownership is unique, because domain names are unique.

I recently revised the text of the contract together with Steve Turner, my gallerist in LA. We simplified the document, keeping the original ideas but making the text more straight forward.

The document is free to download. (pdf link)

I made 10 Gif animations for AND Festival

AND (Abandon Normal Devices) Festival is a summer Festival that happens in several cities in the UK each year. They always ask artists to make new work, and this year they asked me to make a series of ten animated gifs for their blog. They were posted week by week onder the name Happy Mondays.

Here they are all together:
